It is strangely touching for some reason. It reminds me that all my family (apart from my wife and children) live overseas so I only get to see them once ever few years.

heh. I did this once, then had a panic the night before. After a friend's 40th birthday party I had to walk back to my office and ride the bike home. I wanted him to see it when he awoke, but it was 2:30am.. That ride, 1 mile across town in the pitch dark of an early april morning, on a 8 year old's bike, so small knees were practically crashing into my chin, was one of my scariest bike rides ever...
