As the first major inland city in the country, it is thought of as the first purely American city, lacking the heavy European influence that was present on the east coast.
“Many men go through life as though they wore horse blinders or were sleep walking. Their eyes are open, yet they see nothing of their many wild neighbors. Their ears, attuned to motor cars and traffic, sledom detect the music of nature-the singing of birds, frogs, or crickets, or the wind in the leaves. These men, biologically illiterate, often fancy themselves well informed, perhaps sophisticated. They know business trends, or politics, yet haven't the faintest idea of "what makes the world go round”
