1) pick the right glass and the right temperature
2) Swirl
3) Drive by
4) Sniff like a dog.
Now, the final stage, take a drink. Note not only the taste but also how it feels in your mouth and your throat when you swallow. Does it feel "thin"? Does it leave a coating on your mouth like a sugary drink? How about the aftertaste, really bitter? Smokey? Grassy?
Do this when you taste new beers and you will begin getting better at it. If you are really serious, pour two glasses of beer, one you want to describe the taste of and a neutral beer (bud, miller, coors, etc). Do the steps on the "taste" beer, then on the neutral beer, then again on the "taste" beer. It will really help you distinguish the flavors of the beer you are tasting.
