In 1969, my Grandfather, C.F. McGee, participated in a six-week beard contest on the occasion of the Lawrence County (TN) Sesquicentennial. He came in 3rd, (or "he placed 2nd and it looked like a raccoon" according to my grandmother) and had this picture taken. It is framed with wood from a barn on my Great-Great-Grandfather's land in West Point, TN.

During the celebration all the men of the town were required to grow a beard or they would be thrown in jail, which actually happened to the mayor of Lawrenceburg. Here's a couple of pictures of my grandparents on that day: one, two.

Forty years later, I'm thankful to be in a whiskerino with all of you fine fellows!

Thanks, its a story I've been wanting to share for years, literally. I was unable to shoot this for whiskerino 2007 because I spent all the holidays with my in-laws and didn't see my grandparents that winter.
