At some point in the evening (he couldn't remember if it was before or after the company Christmas party, or after his wife turned on the country music, or his imaginary children started crying for no apparent reason at all), he started the drinking.

The drinking led to more drinking, then to some sleeping, then a little bit more drinking, then some time with the porcelain, then a touch more drinking.

The birds mocked him from the back porch when the sun broke over the tops of the houses.
