I've written about ten drafts of this caption and have, ultimately, decided to go with my short and sweet version. Relatively short and sweet that is.

First off, For the past 120 days I have been constantly floored and amazed at the greatness that you all are able to bring to the table. It's absolutely stunning. At the start of this I was scared that recreating the type of magic from the previous iterations would be lost in the shuffle of such a huge user base. I was dead wrong. This year was every bit as epic-ly mindblowing as 2005 and 2007, just with a twist and a style all its own. So, congratulations - you are totally awesome and the past 4 months have proven that without a doubt.

Secondly, I have a challenge for you. With this being the end of Whiskerino there is some concern that these fantastic friendships that we've managed to wrangle together will fall by the wayside. To let such a thing happen would be a horrible disservice to the thing that we've made here. My challenge to you is to keep up with one another. Befriend each other on Facebook, join the Whiskerino group, make Flickr friends, follow each other on Twitter, hold mini-meetups in your area, go on vacation to other cities and share a taco with your brethren. Whiskerino can exist far beyond this website if you put in the effort.

Lastly, and this is the emotional part, I want to extend an enormous Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Whiskerino is a community, through and through. It absolutely would not exist without each and every one of you doing all the amazing things you do every day. I think some of you assume I'm just being overly humble when I deny applause or shrug my shoulders at my moniker being chanted but it's not out of lack of appreciation - it's the fact that I'm just the architect here. I sketched the plans, you all built the house. Running Whiskerino without YOU would be a very sad and lonely website. So, once again, THANK YOU for everything.

Thank you for the images. Thank you for the comments. Thank you for the chat. Thank you for the beers. Thank you for the tacos. Thank you for friendships. I can not express how mind boggling it is to me that this place has generated actual bonds between us all. I've never been on another website that is capable of such a thing.

I am beyond proud of the legacy that we've created. We have truly created a Brotherhood (and Sisterhood) among us all. I hold you all with the greatest respect, appreciation and love for being a part of this with me. There are about ten million OTHER things I want to say and give thanks to specific individuals but I'll do my best to do that through individual commenting. I am indebted to all of you and really can't say enough how much I appreciate all that you've done.

God speed to you all. I hope to see you in May and hear from you soon. Hit me up whenever you plan on coming through Nashville.

I'm glad to have been a part of this again. I took your challenge and last night was able to catch up with a few Athens brethren. Boy did you nail it with the strange bonds that've been created.

Speaking of which, we all want you to visit B'ham, and will make things awesome for you whenever you do.

Your room (which one is it?) looks awesome. Maybe we should consider doing a pen pal-style book or album tradeoff sometime.

You summed it up dude. Whiskerino is us. We are Whiskerino. Without the website there would be no community. Without the community there would be no website. You and I have briefly discussed this before. Regardless of how you feel about it, it was your idea to have a beard competition in 2003. I hate to tell you, but all of this is your fault. That's a good thing.

Thank you so much for this opportunity. Perhaps there can be another whiskerino someday, even if you say that this is the final chapter. I will see you for MM, and when I make it to Nashville. Expect an email from me around April 28th about a commenter account for MM.

Thanks again,
aaron b

Yes, it took all of us to make this thing happen, but most of all it took someone with the humor, intelligence, openness, mad web skills and kindness to wrangle us all towards community. If any one of those skills weren't present in you, this would have been a different experience. Also, that's a rare set of skills to have in a time when a lot of those skills aren't appreciated. You've done something amazing. You've done something utterly absurd. Nice job, sir.

Thank you.

This is an amazing place. Your architecture and curating has generated something that no one apart from the participants and those few brave souls who have glimpsed at our world will never understand. I've thanked you a few times, but I'm making it official right now.

Thanks.

Macle, I've said it before and I'll say it again, you sir, are a gentleman! It's been a pleasure sharing this experience with you. I'm only sorry I couldn't take part in it more this time around but I'm truly glad I stuck with it. I would have regretted bailing out, I'm sure.

Even though I wasn't able to create what I set out to do with the film, who knows what the future will hold. I said that the "short" would be all there was to it but as with anything creative, you do not want to put it in a box, so I won't. All that said, I, along with @motke are very grateful for your input and participation in the project and I extend my thanks to you for starting what I hope is a legacy of relationships that many men will never forget.

I know a man is not an island but every group needs a chief and you have led very well. I'm sure this is not goodbye, it's just a heart-felt thank you!

Dearest Mackle,
appreciater of all things facail hair and liker of good movies, tv shows and books. Yeah...so this was pretty much a shit ton of fun this go round and I totally blame you.. You are too nice of a curator/webmaster..seriously you give awesome gifts b/c you think they are funny see @poison @taco or @timbo (or for cuteness @harry) or #timbo #poison #taco, the pose page...and to top that off you actually take suggestions from users and incorporate them into the site. Not to mention that this is a top notch site and the addition of the dashboard is BEYOND brilliant...no more constantly checking back on images to see if people responded to a question you asked....and then to top it all off when i had a really funny idea for everyman a king day you were more than willing to spend the extra time coding just for a silly theme day joke that had awesomely hilarious punchlines. I seriously got message for weeks thanking me for the king beard (on poeple who didn't participate much) b/c i slammed out a bunch of congratulation comments once KB hit for the day. But what i really like about you is that you are humble about things and even though you know you built the place you really believe (b/c its true) that the users make the site what it is. Well I'm just here to tell you that you ARE one of those user's and a very good one at that. Heck of a commenter you are...and you read the shit out of all the comments on every image you comment on (or at least that's what it seems).. I sort of skim for the important stuff unless it's a really funny image. Oh.. and lastly more than anything even though we've known each other via internets for a few years now and exchanged occasional emails about movies or whatnot i really feel like we became friends moreso through this go round on whiskerino...and I'm kind of glad this is the last whiskerino b/c now i don't really ever have to shave my moustache....but anyway.. thank you for letting us play in your house for a while. It was a crapload of fun. I'll stop typing now... mostly b/c i've got more images to comment on.

Your the results of your editing in the structure and content of this site are a testament to your excellent taste and amazing vision. You've done an awesome job of setting up a system that lets all of this amazingness happen. If it was just that, you'd be worth of extreme thanks, but it's not. So thanks. For everything.

Thanks Michael, it's so rare for me to find guys that I get along with as I'm not really into sports and I don't get along with aggressive dudes. It has been great to just laugh together with brothers in a non competitive setting. In an era where modern life seems to constantly villainize traditional male behavior it has been a welcome relief to find a place where I can forget all that for a bit and just have fun.

Thanks and be well.

OK, seriously, you have steered this thing with such great skill and thought. I love how @mattyc called out how the site has improved and how the features you've added were just the right mix.

I've never before seen such a successful online community either. The branches made to the current members of the site have been very satisfying to discover. It sure says something about you and the folks you keep close.

I have learned a lot from you and from the whiskerino dudes. I have a tendency to let work bog me down and get me down. Having this place around to remind me not to just poke my head up and look around but to get out and talk and make things has made a huge impact on me. I never understood all those secret societies and men's clubs and so forth. Now I do. As silly as it is that's what you've made, but with creativity and shared creations at the heart of it. So perfect. The heart of this thing just keeps beating stronger and stronger every time you see someone just raise the bar like 5 levels or comment on every person's shot even with HUNDREDS of people on here.

I can't imagine how good you feel about all of it except that I feel extremely great right now and lucky to have been brought into this by @poe and accepted and challenged by you and the rest of the incredible men on here. (horrible run-on) We were boys when it started and having watched everyone grow together has been super special. With no tattoos on my body at all I am working on one now for my participation. Not because that's been a trend here, although I am floored by the skullbeards and so forth. Moreso because I always wanted a brother and now I feel that I have hundreds of them.

I definitely take your challenge to heart. Thinking about traveling the world in order to meet as many of the folks on here as possible sounds like a great life story. The man who used to sell us our Christmas trees had a huge map on his wall of all of the places he and his wife had traveled. I'd love to have a map with whiskerino logos pinned to all the locations of beardos I've been.

Well, that's all for now. I too was skeptical about such a huge community this time, but DAMN. Whiskerino 2009 was incredible. Thanks. Talk to you again soon.

Thank you @mackle so much for making this happen. Thank you for allowing me to join this great bearded community a day late. My attendance hasn't been the greatest, but getting on whiskerino and waiting the 10-15 minutes for the entire page to load was totally worth it. The Peace Corps can be really hard and disappointing at times, but it is always nice to have something to look forward to and to be involved in. Whiskerino and the people involved have become a bit of support network these past four months. When I'm having a shitty day here in Azerbaijan I know I can always lot on here and find comments and images to make me laugh and feel better, and even make me more homesick. I just wanted to say thanks again to you and everyone and now I need to figure out what I'm going to get online for now. I will try and connect with as many people as I can on facebook. I just want to say it again. Thank you.

Whiskerino is a monumental feet of all you can eat awesomeness and I'm honored to have been apart of this community.

Also, in terms of how I found this thing:

I had been reading Yewknee for a few years after finding it in 2002 from the 615 link list. When the 'Beard Contest' was launched - I thought it was super weird / strangely alluring. I spent the next few weeks lurking around the site - just watching.

I finally decided I needed to join. I talked @cdub, who worked next to where I lived, into joining me and we where off. We figured if we where going to start late (with way less beard than everyone else) we really needed to work that much harder to prove ourselves and go all out.

Needless to say, the beard contest changed how I look at the world and the rest is beard history.

Thank you.

Michael, thank you so very much for all of this. You are a wonderful guy, and it was a total pleasure to meet you. I can't even begin to describe how great Whiskerino has been for me, and though I regret that this last time is my first time, I can't deny that it has been entirely amazing. From start to finish.

You've taken an exercise that, on the surface, is silly, and you've united hundreds of men (and women) across AN ENTIRE PLANET in four months of friendship. That very notion is utterly mind-blowing. Everyone here is responsible for that in part, but it was you who set it into motion. It's something for you to be hugely proud of to have started and for the rest of us to be hugely proud to have participated in it.

This isn't just a simple web community of guys and girls who like beards. This is a monumental human achievement: getting together a group of people separated by interests, cultures, borders, and tens, hundreds, and thousands of miles of land and sea. It's the human experience, and it's amazing in a way that is unquantifiable.

I will hope against hope that this isn't really the Final Chapter, and that it is actually only the First Hiatus for a thing that will continue on to bring a few hundred people scattered across the Earth together for four months of bonding and the forming of friendships.

Thank you so much for your time and effort. Take care of yourself and keep in touch. Nashville ain't far, and I plan to make it up there again.

I said a little something about this yesterday: You are the architect and the carpenter. You built the gallery where we've been showing our work, hanging out, getting to know each other, forming friendships. The community is what it is because of all the people involved, but your part is larger. You not only designed and built the venue for us, but you show your art here, comment on others' pieces, make friends and act as curator. You're an enabler and a participant. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

It's not so simple as just confidence or artistic awareness or photographic and visual versatility, but it is all that together and a little more besides. So thanks for that too. I'd be a poorer person, a weaker being, without all this. It has at times been a trial itself, but I have reaped benefits beyond any expectation or description. Thank you, sir. Thank you.

It's been a long day on the site, reading, writing, and taking a last look at some of the creative output that exists in part because you took the time and effort to give it space and room to grow.

I, like many who participated, spend lots of hours getting paid to make stuff on the Internet that is ephemeral and transitory, exciting for a moment but destined to be replaced by the next big thing. Whiskerino is such a different beast. Not only did I want to see it succeed now; I really do hope I can look back on this in ten years and find a little bit of my past frozen in time thanks to you.

Thanks again.

first off, i just want to thank you so much for the existence of this insanity. this is the greatest website in the history of the internet as far as i'm concerned, and i'm not kidding! i personally have a hard time spending more than 5 minutes on facebook, yet i find myself spending hours of time on here laughing, commenting, and being amazed by the creativity of everyone involved. it's truly incredible what you have created from the way the site runs to the way you personally run the site. it's great that you keep it clean and family-friendly yet somehow let people be cutting edge and subversive with their creativity at the same time.

okay, that's enough ass-kissing.

not quite. one more thing. on top of all that, in less than a week, you created a page for @timbo that has exploded! that alone is the craziest accomplishment to me of all!

it was really great meeting you and i hope that we can all hang out many more times in the future. please come to LA and we'll watch lots of obscure british tv and eat english candy. i owe you lots of crazy stories that i didn't have the time or voice left to tell you. there's one especially good one that @hale. helped create about a guy named Gary. it's a good one. ryan was crying.

i thank you. emily thanks you. my face thanks you. you're the best.

If this page doesn't set a World Record for number of words on a facial hair posting page, then I'll kill myself. That being said, there is so much I want to say, and could say, and have said, and has been said.. and its all true. I don't know why I waited until now to comment on your page, I tried to comment on all posts today, fail. I tried to comment on everyone on this site I now consider a friend, or at least someone I appreciate and look up to... FAIL? Its 11:47 pacific time, and I don't know if I'll be locked out in 13 minutes, so I have to make sure I get a cohesive thought completed here.

I've been writing comments pretty much non-stop since 5:00pm... trying to say goodbye to this group of people, that I met on the INTERNET? You elude to it in your caption, that not a lot of other web sites accomplish this kind of 'bonding'. I would say the remainder of meaningful interactions I've had with strangers on the web before this is exactly zero. I think there will someday be books written about what you've accomplished here. I saw the failed film that was made this morning for the first time, and I think they may have just missed the story--not that there wasn't a story. In an era where 'social media' is the hottest topic at every business conference in the land, you have done the un-thinkable.. created not a social networking site for friends to stay in touch; not a social networking site for like minded people to collaborate; but a social networking site for strangers--who only have in common the fact that they can grow Facial Hair, to become veritable blood brothers. That.. is totally amazing, and I am sooo happy an proud to have been part of it.

We'll have plenty of time to chat more, I have to hit 'Say it' because i might turn into a pumpkin. Thank you for everything. Thank you for the kind words on my page today. and thanks for, just being alive! The world is a more beautiful place because of it, there is no doubt.

thank you so very much for creating this. I'm still in awe from the throwdown. I met so many awesome people that I now would consider good friends, all because I grew a beard. it was an honor to eat your head, I wish I wouldve gotten the chance to have a conversation with you, but I'm sure I'll be in Nashville again at some point or you'll come up to Chicago. doing this has really helped my creativity, and definitely made me step up my photography game. hell, the main reason I'm doing the yeard is so I can have a reason to take pictures every day, it would just be wrong to stop so suddenly. thank you, really, for creating this. I hope there will be commenting accounts for MM, because I'm definitely going to be a part of that (in spirit!)
I'll stop rambling now, but I'll thank you one last time.
you truly are the king of kings.

You've got mojo baby and you seem poised for big things in the not too distant future. You are amongst the next generation of Nashville's movers, shakers, and trendsetters. I kinda think you're like the next "Grimey." Maybe you'll open a great record store called "Mackle's" in the next few years or establish a hip nightspot called Yewknee's. Maybe both?

Anything is possible. You're such an impressive individual and you've already done soooooooo much for somebody so young (spoken as somebody who is a few years older and hasn't accomplished nearly as much.)

If you really are done with this thing, perhaps you could just give it to @runningantelope like Willy Wonka gave Charlie Bucket his Chocolate Factory? *Just a suggestion.

Well thanks for everything man. This has been a life changing experience for me and so many others.

Peace and love to you. See you round Nashville. I sure hope we get to do this again sometime. Never say never.

Once again you've done something remarkable with Whiskerino (as have all the participants). I wish I could have been more active and involved in all the fun, but as usual a busy life kept me away from the site more than I would have liked. See you in Austin (where there should absolutely be a taco truck swarming of whiskerinos) and most likely back online in May.

p.s. @mackle I hope you do pick up a zumi! really fun little toy. I got mine from photojojo... kinda bought it on a whim (based on the description comparing the camera to a girl you would like to date)

In the past days people have cited Whiskerino as the launching pad for profound friendships. It's been called a safe harbor during difficult times in life. It's served as the platform for proposals, and the platform for birth announcements.
The list of ways in which this online community has directly blessed people, and profoundly changed them for the better, is to large to count.
I know it was never your intention to create a force for good out of a beard growing contest. Who could have possibly planned it? But many people would've balked at the transformation, or at least failed to support the change from pet project to community vehicle.
You'll undoubtedly continue to do great things in life. But you should take great pride in knowing you created something so full of meaning and substance, whose echoes will be heard for years to come.

this is it, my final individual Whiskerino comment. mylast thoughts belong here with you, because it is you that brought me to this point.

late 2003 was a pivotal time in my life, being the starting point of our friendship. there as no way to know what was to come afterwards.

on august 2nd of 2003 i started growing a beard alongside of you, and others who i did not know, but would eventually come to know very well. on september 29th i received a message from daniel. his message and my first response are here:

again, there as no way to know what was to come afterwards, but it is because of you that we are friends. it is also because of you that i have many, many other friends. you have played a very important role in my life by starting this all off, and i am forever grateful.

i wanted to express this more eloquently, but michael, i hold you in the highest regard, and love you.

thank you so much.

Michael, what can I say. I know you aren't one for attention or gushing comments, but I know you will take all these kind word in on your own time. I too was hoping we could have a convo during the throwdown, but I also know you had to "work" that weekend curating your little beard convention. So respectfully I tried to let you do your thing. Let's fix that when you make good on your Phoenix plans. We'll rally the Phoenix crew together.

I always have admired how you make so much time in your day to accomplish great things. I mean, a blog, twitter, full-time job, mixes, record label, friends, email, whiskerino, facebook, shows, etc... You must have a small labor force working for you or you have a magic wand that lets you stop time. Either way, you are a mass media-consumer and maker of cool things. It's impressive.

Well, thanks for growing a beard with me. See you around.

ok bye. i'll see you elsewhere.
