It's heavier than you think. And yes, that is genuine lava, fresh from under the earth.

Hey @mikedemonk, I'm at Kilauea Volcano. CLAME for a great page with pictures, video, etc. As I pulled it up, I was amused that it says: "We can't overemphasize being prepared for the hike - too many times we see tourists with sandals and flip flops - not appropriate or safe for the rough lava surfaces."

Heh. I guess, I'm not into appropriate or safe.

ThatGuy says:
You're amazing, but that footwear is irresponsible. What if some one's kids see this over my shoulder. This is supposed to be a faimly friendly site. Now I have to explain to children that different cultures do things differently. And that just because something is allowed in one place, that it is not necassarily the right thing to do here. That is a conversation that I just never want to have. So....SHAME.

And for anyone that does not recognize sarcasm, scroll back up and read that silliness again. Great shot @justjamey. sorry about the melted flip flops.

I feel like all the tourists come with super heavy duty hiking gear and the locals (which I'm considering you one of) show up in flip flops and start picking up lava like it ain't no thing. Because it isn't. Because you're tough.

wondermade says:
It's a pity you weren't kinged for this fine work. But you can take comfort knowing that with near certainty you are the only man among us who wielded lava yesterday, and perhaps ever.
I would take no small solace in that irrevocable fact.
Posted: Dec 4th, 2009 - 6:07am -
Just Jamey says:
@wondermade Thanks! No harm, no foul. Although, this makes me wonder if I need to do a Lava Redux before the games are over. I wonder if I could make a beard out of Lava?? Without dying, of course.
