This is my kindergartner's lunch this morning. People say they can't get their kids to eat good food, and I just say they aren't making them hungry enough. My kids have eaten this from day one and don't know any different. It is a habit and she doesn't want to have anything to do with the school lunches and talks about how gross the chicken nuggets and the fruit cocktail looks.
Which brings me to Food Rule #1: Eat Food.
We have a tendency to not eat food. We eat stuff, as Pollan calls it, that is edible foodlike substance. It looks like food but is is so processed and preserved that it only resembles food.
Food Rule #19: It if came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don't.
The western diet has incorporated all these things that our great-grandparents would have never even thought about eating.
Food Rule #22: Eat mostly plants, especially leaves.
I'm not saying to be a hippy vegan, as I enjoy meat and eat it regularly, but don't think that you have to have a meat at every meal. Don't be afraid to just eat veggies or to do a meatless chili (I've got a great butternut squash chili recipe I can send you)
Food Rule #25: Eat your colors.
The more color the more better it is for you.
*All of these are adapted from the book "Food Rules: An Eater's Manual" by Michael Pollan.
