As the day of the next world's-greatest-thing-from-Apple-ever approaches, it's nice to remember a side benefit from this neverending march of progress... cheap(er) devices moving towards obsolescence and the transference of cameras from one to the next.

This summer Leica released a new-and-improved M9 digital rangefinder, meaning there were several people with means trading up, leaving a glut of the suddenly unloved M8's on the market.

Because of this, I happened to meet the previous owner of my camera by coincidence -- they were picking up their new and improved just as I had decided to take a risk on the old and busted.

It was interesting seeing the previous link in the chain, and sometimes I wonder where my camera has been that I may never get to see - South America? Africa? New Jersey? Cleveland?

And at the same time, will the previous owner ever know that his once-favorite tool has been used to document a beard-growing contestant? Capture a cat's soul? Record the stresses and surprises of my wedding?

No matter how much I love the latest thing (and believe me, those M9's are sweet indeed) it's great knowing that every so often you can, if you avoid the shiny new bauble, grasp the connective tissue between you and other people's lives and experiences. Plus it's one less thing going into a landfill somewhere.

You have no idea how jealous I am right now.

Okay, you might have some idea.

It's a lot.

I'm so ignorant of camera technology. I should probably do something about that.
