Durham, NC is known colloquially as The Bull City because, before Leroy founded it 328 years ago, it was overrun by wild bulls. The herd would come through every year and basically decimate the crops.
In the spring of 1675, Leroy killed this bull, had it bronzed and put it up in the middle of what would later become known as downtown Durham as a deterrent to the rest of the herd. They got the message, and shortly thereafter the herd left and was never "heard" from again. (That a little wortspiel for the for the wordsmythes out there.)
There was a movement to start calling it The Cockapoo City, but Leroy's too modest for all that.
