Last night my wife mentioned to me that she saw a crack at the base of a large oak tree in our backyard. It was a pretty windy night and we kept hearing a cracking sound. I went out several times in the dark to try and find the source of the sound but in the darkness I was unsuccessful. This morning we discovered that this tree behind me has basically fallen down. Fortunately it's leaning on another tree so it never fell to ground or on something else. One of the tree guys I have been talking to said that if the wind had been blowing toward my house the tree would be on top of it right now. I'm sad to see the tree go but I'm glad it didn't crush my house and family.

Firewood! Oh, you live in Florida. Maybe you can make a dugout canoe?

Living at a camp, we always worry about fallen trees. We have a ton of pine (which means the roots more spread out than dig deep into the ground). So, we have trees fall way to often. Glad you and your family are safe.

that sucks. a couple months after we moved into our house (years ago) lightning struck a tree in our front yard on the 4th of july. talk about fireworks! it slowly started dropping branches, then the next spring it didn't grown any leaves. we had to have it cut down.

LOL @HiImTerry.

Just another reason to take out nature before it takes us out!

That sucks dude. Not the part about your house and family being safe. The part about an old tree falling down in the yard. That part sucks.

It's always a little dismaying to see something of this nature falling victim to anything. Thankfully, everyone is ok, as well as your house. Even more blessed is the new dugout canoe you'll have!

Glad you are ok. That is a big ass tree! We had to cut down a huge Oak tree for our road and power, very hard decision, but had to be done.

we had this amazing oak tree in our yard. one night during a crazy storm it split in half and just missed the house. they came and cut the whole thing down. it completely changed our yard, and even the climate of the house in the summer. i miss that tree.....stupid rain and wind storms.

Sorry about your tree, glad you're all okay. We had a horrific ice storm here in SW Missouri on January 12, 2007 (not that it's indelibly etched on my brain or anything). I had two trees fall on my house; that's pretty freaking scary when that happens. And, you really miss an old tree with character when it's gone.
