Theme Week: Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust a Move,) SNK NEO-GEO

Not only did I play the hell out of Puzzle Bobble in the arcade, so did my wife. We own Puzzle Bobble or Bust a Move in nearly every trim it is available and most of them are great, this version for the Neo Geo Pocket Color is not an exception.

The play is simple- Guide your little lizard avatar to aim various colored bubbles at other bubbles suspended from the ceiling. Join three or more bubbles to 'pop' them. If any unpopped bubbles remain that were dependent on the ones you just popped, gravity takes over and they are removed from the play field as well.

The random nature at which the colors come up made for some great score-builders and some horribly sad defeats- all at the mercy of chance.

As for the Neo Geo Pocket Color (NGPC) - I love this little guy! Released about a year after the Gameboy Color, it sported a 16-bit processor instead of the 8-bit in the GBC. If not for the damned Pokemon and Nintendo's excellent marketing, the NGPC would have been a serious contender. A big if, but one that would have likely prevented the NGPC from being the last consumer game system SNK would ever produce.

Puzzle Bobble has stolen more than a small amount of money from my pocket. I remember the upright in one of the cafeterias at college quite well. I eventually got it for PC and PS2. I haven't looked for it on the DLC for PS3... I guess I know what I'll be doing in a few minutes.

Oh - and my "honorable mention" today is Samurai Showdown II (cart sitting on my knee.) It saddens me that I don't have enough days in theme week to share my infatuation with this game as well. Just know that it is beyond enjoyable.

I have always loved the lizard avatars in this game. They always seemed to me like characters ready for their own cartoon / major licensing that just never took off - a shame because they're just so darn well done!
