Theme Day: Bonk's Revenge, NEC TurboGrafix 16 (PC Engine)

When I was younger, I did not own a TG16, but I so wanted one. My friend Isaac had one (Isaac got everything!!!) and I played it any chance I got. Bonk was different and special, especially since I couldn't play at home, so it holds a special place in my gamer heart.

Bonk's Adventure was my favorite because it was the first, but I couldn't find the HUCard for it today, so Bonk's Revenge is what is depicted (just as good as the first Bonk, IMO.)

The story is simple - You are a caveman and the evil King Drool is your enemy. Eat various meats, often obtaining powerups, and smash enemies with your enormous forehead until you get to Drool and vanquish him.

Splatterhouse also pictured because there's just not enough days in this theme week.

This is already getting long, so I'll refrain from geeking out about the TG16 (and TurboDuo and TurboExpress) and how superior it was to the Sega Genesis. I mean - just look at the game cards! Beyond brilliant. Poor NEC.

Most TurboGrafix 16 (PC Engine) games can be purchased via the Wii Shop channel.

@DavidW - Yes! Yes! Yes!!! I was hoping I wasn't the only bit-junkie out here for theme-week. I'll definitely pick up WiffleBall DS, but I can't find it cheaper than $10 - Where'd you score it for $4?

@davis: You didn't miss out on much man. I had the choice of the Turbografx and the Genesis. I really wanted the Turbografx and I got it for Christmas the year it came out because Electronic Gaming Monthly and Game Pro said Legendary Axe was the BEST game ever. Well, it wasn't. That game was a muthafu**er to play. Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (which came with the system) was pretty cool, but I beat it easily and it had little replay value. I never got to play any of the Bonk games.

I really wish I would have gotten the Sega. But at least I didn't get a Neo-Geo!

What about Legendary Axe!?

Bonk was cool, but Genesis did what Nintendidn't (or don't, but you get the idea)

Wasn't the TG16 like $900? I don't think that helped its cause.

David W. says:
@Corey I found it at GameStop. Inside there was a receipt from 2008, when it had been originally purchased at Best Buy for $20. It was like buying a time capsule.

Also, I used to own a TurboGrafx. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

@soulglo1976 - that may be true, but ninja spirit on Virtual Console is pretty rad.
